Norfolk's gardeners most obsessive in the UK

25/06/2003

Garden envy is so strong in Norfolk that hundreds of obsessed gardeners are now secretly using their home computers to ensure their blooms will grow to be the best.

GAME stores in the region have been inundated with middle aged customers during the last fortnight, as green fingered fanatics flocked to buy the UK’s latest garden design programme – version 3 of Geoff Hamilton’s 3D Garden Designer.

More people in Norfolk than anywhere else in the UK have bought the new software.

And so great is demand that it’s outselling teen favourites such as football game FIFA 2003, and the action game Spider Man The Movie.

The hi-tech garden design software allows gardeners to use their computer to plan the perfect garden, taking into account local soil and weather conditions – doing away with the need for seasons and seasons of lengthy trial and error. The latest version contains data on over 3,700 plants.

Anna Macario, Marketing Director of GAME said “Norfolk is famous for it’s beautiful gardens – but the warm climate and rich soil are no guarantee for success.”

“We’ve suddenly had a surge of people who normally come to GAME to buy presents for their grandchildren, but they’re now shopping for themselves. They know they can be a step ahead in the race for the perfect garden by using their computer to do some of the hard work.”

“The keenest gardeners are now disappearing into their sheds clutching a laptop as well as a trowel and a pair of secateurs.”

Sales have soared in the last 2 weeks, selling most in GAME stores in:

1. King’s Lynn
2. Lowestoft
3. Nottingham
4. Norwich
5. Loughborough
6. Burton on Trent
7. Banbury
8. Sheffield
9. Chelmsford
10. Ipswich

Glasgow and Dumfries saw the lowest sales. The data has been compiled from the GAME Reward card database, which measures trends from over 4 million customers.
