First NVQ training programme for Games retailer
10/09/2004
GAME, Europe’s favourite video games chain has launched a new training scheme in over 80 of its stores this June.
Staff will be given the opportunity to gain a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ), which aims to equip individuals with occupational competencies. Dubbed the ‘Academy of Excellence’ by GAME, the scheme will be promoted internally with the slogan “Working together, achieving together”.
The NVQ will complement GAME’s existing in-house training scheme, ‘Excellence in Practice’ (EIP). Everyone who joins GAME has to take part and pass EIP to become a member of staff.
The objective of the EIP programme is to provide new or existing staff with a solid foundation of knowledge and training to help get the best from them and their colleagues.
Initially three different types of qualification will be on offer, including Retail (levels 2 or 3), Customer Service (levels 2 or 3) and Team Leading. Other categories are planned to be available later, such as Business Administration, Distribution & Warehousing and Call Handling.
The scheme will be rolled out shortly to four internal Company regions in the South, South West, North West, East Anglia and Midlands areas, covering a potential of 600 staff. The project will be available in all GAME’s 380+ stores in the UK by the end of 2004.
Each member of GAME staff will be assigned their own Learning and Development Manager, who will support employees on their training and work schedules.
Malcolm Knight, Head of Training and Development said “Through offering this training opportunity to our staff, we’re able to put into practice our commitment to investing in all our staff, and giving them the choice over which qualifications they wish to work towards.”
“Our staff will be able to learn a lot from NVQ courses and it will benefit them, whether they work in stores, the Distribution Centre or in Head Office. But our ultimate aim is that this will translate into an even better experience for GAME customers.”
“Existing retail clients of the newly centralised National Contracts Service (NCS) include Asda, Orange and Marks and Spencer, so we’re in good company.”
Torin Spence, Sector Accounts Manager from the National Contracts Service said “GAME’s existing training infrastructure is already at a very high standard. We’re excited to be working with this fast-moving and growing company, to help them and their staff excel in the way they approach and carry out their training.”
